About Alexandra FitzGerald
I began learning about pottery during undergrad at Plattsburgh State University of New York.  As a Junior, I felt like I had come into the game a bit late but, nevertheless, fell in love with the medium (after many trials and errors!).  After receiving my BFA Degree in drawing, graphic design and ceramics, I took a 2 year hiatus from pottery to focus on graphic design.  I couldn't stay away for long, though, and restarted my education in clay at the Clay Art Center in Portchester, NY.  Within a year's time I made the decision to pursue an apprenticeship in Washington state where I worked for 6 months.  I have since returned home and now work at the Clay Art Center as the Community Arts Assistant and a member artist.
Nostalgia and self reflection have been themes in my art for a long time. I've always loved story telling and the drama that can be cultivated through word and image. The ability to transport yourself to a completely different state by just utilizing those two things is magic in and of itself. It is my hope that the memories I illustrate bring new focus and perspective to those that use my pots during the things they do everyday. It is so important for our mental health to take the time to de-clutter the traffic circle that is the mind.  Using something handcrafted, like a mug or bowl, creates an entirely new experience around an object that has been a part of our daily rituals since birth.  Drinking, eating, decorating our dwellings, I want my pieces to disrupt the non-stop buzzing of our brains and give a moment, however brief, of surprise and quiet.  It is in these moments that we are truly at piece and in harmony with the world around us instead of fighting against it at every turn.
